Sustainable Libraries Initiative Partners with the Seed Library Network
A new collaboration aims to bring seed library resources to libraries and their communities.
Suffolk County, NY –June 2, 2025 – The Sustainable Libraries Initiative has partnered with the Seed Library Network to provide members with tools and resources on several topics pertaining to seed libraries.
Seed libraries have become a popular way for libraries to become more involved in building resilient communities. Responding to the increased interest on the topic among Sustainable Libraries Initiative members, the SLI has expanded its resources by collaborating with the Seed Library Network.
The Seed Library Network is an organization that intends to help communities increase access to locally grown food; enhance community resilience and food security; preserve stories, culture and genetic diversity; and take a proactive approach to climate change and environmental justice through seed libraries.
In addition to a kickoff webinar (details below), resources provided include a newsletter, discussion forum, guides on getting started, seed saving techniques, bountiful plant programming ideas, and instructions on how to grow and maintain a seed library.
"We are honored to be working in partnership with the venerable Seed Library Network," said Rebekkah Smith Aldrich, Board President of the Sustainable Libraries Initiative, "Their leadership, expertise, and generosity is strengthening seed libraries across the world, our partnership is a natural fit!"
To kickoff this relationship, the SLI and Seed Library Network are offering a free webinar, “Sustaining a Seed Library: Borrowing Procedures & Community Donations,” on Wednesday, June 18th at 12:00 PM Eastern.
"This class is super helpful if you’re looking to build or strengthen a seed library,” said Seed Library Network Founder Rebecca Newburn. “You’ll learn how to set up clear borrowing procedures, encourage seed returns, and vet donated seeds—plus get tips on community outreach and building a diverse and sustainable collection. It’s packed with practical info and easy ways to get people involved."
For more information, please check out the SLI’s Seed Library resource page, register for our webinar, or visit the Seed Library Network website.
